A bit more detail about a tweet I made before re: my experience with vaccinated individuals being admitted for COVID. This is the experience in my area of Peel 1/
Yes, I have seen people who have been vaccinated admitted for COVID. The majority of these individuals were exposed soon after they got the first dose (some were probably the day of!) 2/
Yes, some may have gotten false sense of security and gone on to have indoor gatherings; most though were getting heavy indoor exposure from other positive household members usually who are essential workers 3/
Majority of people vaccinated and then admitted to hospital, did not go on to require ICU care (i.e. they could be treated with low-flow oxygen on a regular hospital ward) 4/
I& #39;ve also noticed that those who are >2w past first vaccine dose, if admitted, overall tend to be less sick than unvaccinated counterparts 5/
There have been a few vaccinated people who have gone on to require critical care (i.e. mechanical ventilation or high-flow oxygen). This has been a mixture of people >2w and <2w from vaccine dose. Most are older and have medical conditions 6/
An interesting note I& #39;ve made before: in speaking with COVID affected ppl, I have also heard multiple times where person& #39;s entire household is infected and sick, except for grandma/pa who had their vaccination who were largely unaffected 7/
All this is to say we should remember people hospitalized with COVID represent a small percentage of overall people who have COVID. We don& #39;t see the large numbers of vaccinated people who have been exposed to COVID who either don& #39;t get sick, or get very mildly ill. 8/
The first dose of COVID vax (Pfizer, AZ, Moderna) gives excellent protection against death and hospitalization at the 4 week point and beyond. Right now though with a large amount of COVID circulating, still need to remember our other preventative measures 9/
These vaccines work! Bottom line: need to continue to get them in to arms. #vaccineswork
