I have found that much of evangelicalism’s doctrine of the heart is dictated by tradition or culture:
The heart ≠ emotions
The heart ≠ Sin itself
The heart = the whole person

The heart = the whole person
The heart is the seat of volition, willing, choosing, purposing, and thinking.
Every desire, every action, every thought, finds its source in the heart.
When desire to sin - it’s from the heart
When you desire to obey God - it’s from the heart (Matthew 12:35)

“The heart from man’s birth is deceitful and desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9)
Until
God’s grace when man is given a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26a), where God’s commandments are put on the heart (Jeremiah 31:33b), and we have become “obedient from the heart” (Romans 6:17a)

If we apply Jer. 17:9 to the regenerate, we not only twist the scriptures but diminish, and insult the work of God.
God promised a circumcision of the heart so that the people would love him with all their heart (Deuteronomy 30:6) and this is fully realized in Christ (Col. 2:12)

If this was not so, we could never even begin to love the Lord with our heart
God is working in our hearts for us to will and work for him (Phil. 2:13)
We are new creatures in Christ (2 Cor. 7:17) and are told to draw near with a true and clean heart (Heb. 10:22)

God desires a heart of:
Integrity (Eph. 6:5)
Purity (Matt. 5:8)
Uprightness (Psalm 64:10)
Steadfastness (Ps. 57:7)
Humility (Matt. 11:28-29)
Gladness (Psalm 19:8)
And more

We are told to:
Keep our hearts with all diligence (Proverbs 4:23)
Obey with a sincere heart (Eph. 6:5)
Not harden the heart (Hebrews 3:8-15)
Be obedient from the heart (Romans 6:17)
None of these notions are possible apart from a changed heart

The Christian life is a life circumcised in heart and living for God. The Lord says in explaining the parable of the sower,
“As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.”
Luke 8:15

We are not sinless in this life, however, which is why we “guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23) and store up the word in our heart that we might not sin against the Lord (Psalm 119:11).
We do this by walking in fellowship with God.

Christian - you have died with Christ and have been raised with him. You have been made into a new creature and are to work out of the desires of the Spirit as you are conformed to Christ lest you become ineffective and unfruitful in your knowledge of the Lord (2 Peter 1:3-11)
