There are at least 2 reasons why we should be talking about white supremacy re what happened at the Capitol yesterday. The first is the structural racism & bias in the Capitol police response to violent white rioters esp in comparison to their “readiness” & actions yesterday, 1/
as so much better expressed by @/ProfessorCrunk & others throughout the day, incl @/craigjcalhoun describing police acting as museum guards rather than defenders of the Capitol. Then there were clear white supremacist extremists 2/ https://twitter.com/professorcrunk/status/1347013260353146886
in the rioters who broke into the Capitol, as captured in videos & images of the tattoos, tshirts, & flags being waved. There were super-Trump MAGA supporters in the mix along with QAnon & militia members, anti-Vaxxers- all part of a coalitional far right toxic mix that 3/
has varying layers of overt white supremacist belief, including antisemitism, racism, anti-immigration sentiment, along with the misogyny & toxic masculinity that rarely gets mentioned. But threads of images like this tell a story about this toxic mix that 4/ https://twitter.com/rafaelshimunov/status/1346963410966048768
is not coming through in the pundits’ hot takes. Look at these images. What we are seeing is alliance building in violent action across the far right spectrum. This is what the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville was literally trying to do- unite the far right spectrum. 5/
This is why @GIRD_S & others have insisted that this insurrection will be seen by the far right as a tremendous & inspirational success: not just bc they made it all the way into the Rotunda & chamber but because they did unite the right to get it done. 6/
Two questions now: will there (finally) be some accountability about the racist response of local law enforcement, both in their lack of preparation & their actions on the ground? and will this event lead to the same kind of fragmentation within the far right spectrum 7/
that we saw after Charlottesville, along with a push for better “optics”? Or will it further embolden, empower & spur on violence by white extremists who feel confident they will be treated with kid gloves? /END
I meant anti-maskers not anti-Vaxxers, based on images, but the latter could have been there too- just not immediately obvious to me.
There are strange coalitions across anti-government extremists & anti-Vaxxers as part of the toxic mix & new coalitionism.
