Series of celebratory tweets coming at you!1/ The world reached a major milestone this month: the December releases of the Protected Planet databases (The WDPA and WD-OECM) show that protected and conserved areas now cover 16.0% of the world's land and 7.72% of the ocean!
2/ We know this thanks to the amazing efforts of governments and many other stakeholders in updating their data throughout 2020. The CBD Secretariat also played a vital role in supporting governments to update their data.

3/ This significant milestone brings us closer to meeting an important element of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11: that 17% of the world's land and 10% of the world's ocean should be within protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures ( #OECMs)




4/ When published in April 2021, the Protected Planet Report will provide a complete assessment of whether each element of the target has been met.
