@shandro @jkenney @GoAHealth I just returned from being on-call for a rural hospital for the long weekend. During the past 4 days, I had to resuscitate two people who were in septic shock (a blood infection so severe that one's organs start to fail), 1/n
intubate and send another away via STARS air ambulance to the closest ICU, manage a child with a significant overdose, arrange care for another patient needing an emergency surgery, manage a local outbreak of transmutable infection, 2/n
round on my 12-15 in-patients, manage mental health crises and help solve socioeconomic challenges, console the family of a dying patient, help manage people's chronic illness, and much more. 3/n
Rural family medicine is a specialty of its own. I love rural medicine and I intentionally incorporate many emergency medicine, internal medicine and critical care medicine during my training so that I can provide the best care for rural patients. 4/n
Even with my passion for rural medicine and training, I feel that my physical, mental, and emotional limitations are challenged during every on-call shift in rural communities. UCP's decision to force physicians who do not share the same enthusiasm for rural medicine... 5/n
shows a complete lack of understanding of the unique challenges faced while practicing rural medicine. You cannot expect a long-distance runner to win a gold medal in a 50m race. Would you ask a dermatologist to do your appendix surgery? 6/n
Each physician has his/her own passion and skill sets that they have been training hard for. While UCP tries to make it appear like they care about rural patients, they are doing these rural communities a complete disservice by trying to conscript physicians to these towns. 7/n
UCP's priority is pushing through their political agendas, rather than truly caring for Albertans. This tyranny must stop. 8/n
