TWITTER NEEDS A LESSON ON HOW TO RESPONSIBLY RECREATE IN THE OUTDOORS. i’ve had too many “debates” recently on this platform for things that simply aren’t up for discussion.

here’s a thread on the 7 principles of leave no trace
1) PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE

this one is so important. if you’re hiking, are you carrying the 10 essentials? do you know what the weather will be like? what’s your plan if someone gets hurt? do you know what to do & expect with wildlife?

TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES

photos of models in a field of flowers are gorgeous but can cause some serious & permanent damage to the ecology of an area. don’t be a meadow stomper. same goes for the desert!!

DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY:

pack it in pack it out. if duty calls, dig a 6ft deep cat hole for your bodily waste, always 200 ft from water sources. carry out all bodily waste if recreating in the desert. old jelly jars work great!

LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND

don’t stack rocks, don’t take rocks, don’t pick flowers, leave everything as is. don’t carve initials into trees, don’t graffiti rocks. just leave nature be.

MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS

what are the fire restrictions? is your campfire sustainable? can you properly clean after your campfire?

do: use existing fire rings & buy wood from the forest to prevent transmission of invasive insects!!

RESPECT WILDLIFE

first of all, a moose or buffalo or whatever will plow you down.

keep tents 200 feet from water sources to give ample space

keep a safe distance from animals. don’t walk closer, just bust out the zoom lens for a better look!

BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS

people don’t want to listen to your music, they don’t wanna see your dog’s doodoo, they definitely don’t want to see the remnants of a smoke bomb in the desert. be mindful that public land is for everyone, be responsible
