Well we finished counting the absentee ballots today in #AD24. After going through 1400 or so preliminarily invalidated ballots here is what I observed and some suggestions for @BOENYC to consider for the future:
The most frequent basis for invalidation was a missing signature on the ballot envelopes. So many people forgot to sign! This is a design issue that needs to be looked at for the future. Putting a giant arrow
where folks need to sign should be considered
where folks need to sign should be considered
Many people did not place the ballot in the ballot envelope instead placing a signed ballot envelope separate from the ballot in the mailing envelope. The ballot envelope was not big enough. It’s a struggle to get the ballot in and I can only imagine the difficulties for elderly.
Many ballot envelopes were not sealed. Perhaps in the middle of a pandemic people are less inclined to lick the envelope. A self adhesive envelope may help here.
Untimely post marks (after 6/23) was another frequent reason for invalidation. Someone even wrote on their envelope that they didnt receive the ballot until 6/23 and it was post marked 6/24. Lets just get rid of the postmark requirement and have a cut off date like 6/30.
