Like everyone else I have been reading about COVID daily for what feels like years already.
One of the best pieces I read that I don't think got enough attention was by @IrfanDhalla where he calls for us to aim for elimination not containment. 1/6 https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-elimination-not-adaptation-is-the-courageous-covid-19-choice-for/

Our number of new cases are steadily dropping. Multiple provinces & territories have many days w/ no new cases and other regions have single or low double digits. Spending a few minutes on the @globeandmail tracking system is illuminating and inspiring 2/6 https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-coronavirus-cases-canada-world-map-explainer/

Our testing capacity has steadily gone up across the country. Targeted testing is also improving with more mobile testing, data driven testing etc.
Test results are also coming back faster.
Contact tracing has also steadily improved using digital & non-digital means. 4/6

Aiming for zero does NOT mean we can't also move towards re-opening the economy or society more broadly.
That is a falsely binary argument.
In fact the efforts we take to get to zero can help us re-open more effectively and in a more sustained way. 5/6

Finally, we may not be able to get to zero or may exactly we may get there only some of time - likely many cities, provinces or even other countries. But aiming for zero is a worthwhile goal.
