Barriers: lack of financial income, confidence and info about support. Disabled writers more likely to find lack of income a challenge early on.
Disabled writers 16% more likely to face discrimination or fear of it.
19% of writers identified as disabled.
Most writers have an alternative source of income.
43% of disabled people in the arts find their disability to be a barrier to their career progression.
7% more disabled people than non-disabled received advice and support from literature organisations - disabled people are more reliant and in more need of support.
Double the number of respondents identifying as LGBTQ+, identified as being disabled (15% and 30%,respectively.)
Disabled emerging writers are more likely to report lack of income as a barrier to career progression.
I think it& #39;s safe to say being disabled is a barrier to early career progression! Many of us can& #39;t support ourselves via alternative means, and find support through structured programmes and mentoring hard to find (if you know where to find it, tell me!)
I think, too, we struggle with mental processing and energy and finding opportunities/applying is a real ball-buster. It would be great to see everything listed in an accessible format that doesn& #39;t rely on scrolling for hours on end and picking out suitable opportunities.
