Okay let's talk about the Rina scene in episode 9 #hsmtmts
I noticed 3 parallels in the whole episode but we're only going to talk about 2 because they're within this scene.
So this first one is at the end of the scene where Gabriella and Troy are talking about her acceptance into Stanford:
For the parallel, most notably these parts:
Compared to part of the Rina scene:
Both Troy and Ricky struggle with what to say and they are both told not to say anything. In the Troy/Gabriella scene he asks her "Why are we saying goodbye?" and she mends it with "I meant 'good night'." and after a bittersweet moment he leaves and they both know it's a goodbye.
Gabriella launches into her song about how she hates goodbyes and expresses her hurt over the situation and how she walks away to stop it from hurting as much. Which I mean
In the Ricky/Gina scene from episode 9, Ricky is called to get into costume and when he leaves Gina says, "Bye." and is visibly upset about it.
The next parallel is also from HSM 3. Right after they dance and kiss, Troy explains the impact Gabriella's had on all of them.
That scene was a pretty straight forward one so I don't really have to go into depth about anything Troy says but Ricky's confessional, to me anyway, felt a lot like that.
It was lot less to the point though and more confusing so I think it's this that threw everyone one for a loop and made people question whether he was actually happy she was back. I think he was but more on that later.
It came out that way 1) because he himself is not quite sure what to make of his feelings about it and 2) Ricky isn't someone that articulates his feelings well.
In the confessional he says that he isn't the same person he was a week ago or is maybe even /back/ to who he was before that and who he's always been. It's interesting he puts a fine line between who he was a week ago and who he's always been. The two are not the same.
Things changed when Gina got there and and now they've changed again because she left. Specifically with him.
And this really just brings me back to this twitter interaction:
Moving away from the parallels, in this scene Ricky is conflicted and there are things left unsaid. He's really happy to see her. He is! But he doesn't know what to say to her. And he says something interesting before he tells her that.
"I wish..."
I can't 100% say what he was gonna say but I feel like he wishes things could be different. That this wasn't happening right now and that she wasn't leaving. There's not really much to go off of but I think because it follows him saying "I never thought we'd see you again."
he's thinking something along those lines. "I wish it didn't have to be like this." And I think at this point--like the whole episode--he's really trying to move away from whatever he's feeling for Gina because she's back. She is.
But one night only. And then she'll be gone again.
